REVIEWER REMARKS

"I know of no work in English that comes close to equaling the detail or depth of Piljac's treatment of the wine history of her nation.

Of particular interest to American readers and to wine's recent past is her personal involvement in the scientific solution to one of the most baffling mysteries of modern viticultural history. That is the discovery of the probable European origins of California's world famous Zinfandel wine grape."

Professor Charles L. Sullivan
American wine writer and author of
'Encyclopedia of California wine history'

"This book will have a wide audience: scientists will read it as a detective tale, historians will learn from it about the history of Dalmatia by following the 'Dalmatian wine trail', and wine lovers and casual tourists will use it as a wine guide where they can find information about grape varieties and vineyards - the symbols of Dalmatia's beauty.

…the book represents a novel contribution on the topic of history and destiny of viticulture in Croatia, written in English for the first time."

Professor Sibila Jelaska
Professor and member of
The Croatian Academy of Science and Art

"For American readers and wine lovers, a welcome and long-needed book, indeed!

…the best promotion of Croatia, its unspoiled beauty, its rich history, and its abundance of unique wine.

A true Croatian-American success story! Dr. Piljac's book is an invaluable and praiseworthy contribution to the existing literature on Zinfandel, the most popular grape in California, and to the existing literature on Croatia and its winemaking past, as well."

Jagoda Bush
Voice of America broadcast journalist
Author of VOA series 'On the Zinfandel trail'

A qoute from the July 10th, 2002, issue of the Los Angeles Times / Interview with Professor Carole Meredith of UC Davis after the discovery of Crljenak kaštelanski – the Croatian match for Zinfandel:

One of the most important contributions was made by a Croatian student at UC Davis. Jasenka Piljac was a dishwasher in Meredith's laboratory in the early '90s. After graduating from Davis and returning to Zagreb, Piljac served as translator and research assistant during Meredith's 1998 sleuthing mission. "The timing worked out very well," says Meredith. "I would not have been able to do it without her. And that's an example of the almost eerie way things have fallen into place on this quest."
